Rubies

IMG_8288Last Saturday, I spent the day in Raleigh with my sister. We met up for a matinee performance of Carolina Ballet’s Rubies. The show was the company’s season opener and featured short pieces by George Balanchine, one of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century. Carolina Ballet’s artistic director, Robert Weiss, was once a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, invited to join by Balanchine himself. And having the opportunity to watch Balanchine’s original choreography and vision being represented in the present day was such a treat.

The show opened with Raymonda Variations. The music by Glazunov was charming, and the costumes were gorgeous. Unfortunately, the majority of the actual variations were not as impressive. I’ve always felt that Carolina Ballet seems more like a dance school, rather than a professional company. Some of its principals and soloists are amazing, but the rest almost look like amateurs, in comparison. I blame my feelings on growing up in Columbus, watching Balletmet, where each dancer is undeniably athletic, confident, and expressive. Back in Raleigh, most of the Raymonda solos, which require extra conviction due to Balanchine’s difficult choreography, turned out characterless and lackluster, and a few were even awkward. It was the pleasant group numbers by the corps that saved the beginning of the show.

The next piece was The Steadfast Tin Soldier, an adorable pas de deux, based on the the Hans Christian Andersen story and accompanied by Bizet’s delightful music. The two toys danced together, fell in love, and made cute, weird attempts to hug each other (weird because their limbs were too stiff… Because they were toys). They were a joy to watch, so when the wind finally blew the doll into the fire, the entire audience felt for the tin solider.
rondo-620x465Rondo alla Zingarese, an excerpt from Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet, featured by far the best music: the fourth movement of Brahms’s Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, nicknamed “Gypsy Rondo.” I love how the music combines the fiery passion and energy of folk with the intricacies and elegance of classical. So much emotion packed into one short work!

I don’t think the dancers were quite able to keep up with the music’s dynamic spirit. But it was still fun to watch Balanchine’s choreography and the flirtatious courtship between the gypsies.

À la Françaix, a rarity that shows Balanchine’s scarcely seen humorous side, is a modern-day (for the time) parody of La Sylphide, in which a girl is jilted by her fiancé when he mysteriously meets a fairy. Yes, it’s as random as it sounds.

1379791_616943308357838_1484174746_nThis piece was less about the steps and more about the personality, and the dancers did an admirable job of exaggerating their French characters. Françaix’s Serenade provided the perfectly whimsical and ethereal accompaniment.

The show ended with the title piece Rubies, taken from Balanchine’s plotless Jewels. The curtain rose above all of the dancers standing in a line, their shiny, red costumes complete with sparkling, red  gems. Under the lighting, the dancers glowed like fire, and the audience couldn’t help collectively letting out ooh’s and ah’s. That first sight really was breathtaking.

Though Stravinsky was Russian, his music in this work contained much more American influences. Balanchine’s choreography here was also very American, as he incorporated jazz rhythms and abstract movement. It subtly glorified the human body’s capabilities and was absolutely luxurious to watch.rubies

The dancers’ faces were generally stoic, but the audience could still sense their enthusiasm for the dance, probably more so than in all of the previous pieces combined. Rubies was undoubtedly the highlight of the show.IMG_3066

There was a food truck outside the theater, so obviously we had to stop by. Beth is going to love this candid picture of herself on the internet!

Asian-style vegetarian dumplings. Yum!

IMG_0300Afterwards, we did some shopping before getting dinner at Brio, where I ordered my two favorite salads: Caprese and the Brio chopped salad. Basically, it was an all-around fabulous day!

Well, it finally happened, the moment everyone’s been waiting for: I got an iPhone. After years of people hounding me about still owning a Blackberry, I made the switch last week. And so far, I haven’t been disappointed! The best thing about the iPhone 5S is its speed, which is truly impressive. I’m also amazed by the camera’s quality and, of course, the fingerprint ID. The gold color, which is closer to champagne than the hue shown above, is stunning in its subtlety and worth the longer wait. If you’re eligible for an upgrade, I’d recommend the 5S over any other phone, including the iPhone 5C, the Samsung Galaxy, and, obviously, any Blackberry.

When I studied abroad in France, I ate out for basically every meal, so I never really needed to go to a grocery store. Still, my friends and I would always find ourselves at the nearest Carrefour, in order to grab yet another jar of the most wonderful spread in the world. Speculoos is a type of European spice cookie, which you’ve probably had before as a complimentary airline snack. And speculoos spread, also known as cookie butter or, as I like to call it, Christmas in a jar, is literally made up of crushed cookies. This magical substance goes on anything, but I think it’s best to dip pretzels straight into the jar. Apparently, I didn’t get the memo when speculoos began making an appearance in the U.S., but Trader Joe’s seems to have started a following for it. Their version isn’t the best I’ve had, but it certainly gets the job done and blows boring peanut butter out of the water.
IMG_5592I generally avoid Forever 21 because it’s the most stressful place on earth (except maybe the trenches of Afghanistan or a tightrope strung across two skyscrapers). But when I saw through a store window my favorite wild animals parading around, I had no choice but to go in. These pants are incredibly comfortable and surprisingly flattering. However, when I wore a coat that hid their cut, I did get asked if I was wearing pajamas in public…

IMG_2127I think the last time I’d had a POM Wonderful drink was in high school. Fortunately, a friend recently recommended POM Coconut, and now I’m so glad that POM has returned to my life. I was already the biggest fan of coconut water, but this is a great alternative for those who want its benefits, but can’t stand the taste.

Even though I haven’t been to a haunted house since high school, I remember how much fun they were. Something about being scared to the point of crying is actually hilarious. So this video of Ellen DeGeneres sending her staff members to a haunted house is simply hysterical. (Note: If you’ve ever been to the Haunted Hoochie [whose website I won’t link because it’s fairly graphic] near Columbus, you’ll probably find the “haunted house” in this video to be tame.)

How Firm Thy Friendship

This past weekend, I finally got to visit Ohio for Homecoming and the Columbus Marathon! The sad thing about graduating and growing older is that most friends eventually move away, and it gets increasingly difficult for everyone to visit at the same time. But I still had a full schedule of catching up with dear friends, which was just what I needed. I only wish I’d taken more pictures!

IMG_1380

It was so great seeing old friends, some of whom I’d been friends with since the fourth grade and others I hadn’t seen in two years!

IMG_1317I decided not to attend the Homecoming game against Iowa (the Buckeyes’ 19th game undefeated!) to save myself from having to stand for long periods of time before the marathon. Instead, I watched with friends at campus bars.IMG_1438I also ate at as many of my favorite Columbus-area restaurants as humanly possible. To decide on where to go, I might’ve referred to a comprehensive list I made while still in Georgia of all the foods I missed…
IMG_4395

The winners included Max & Erma’s, Tim Horton’s, Knead, Northstar, Jeni’s, Jimmy John’s, La Chatelaine, Tai’s, Cap City, and Cane’s. I know all of my Columbus friends are drooling right now.IMG_6869

While staying at my friends’ house, I met this precious kitty, Scarlett. We formed an unexpected bond, confirmed on the night when she slept in the crook of my elbow.

IMG_4910

I did get a chance to stop at Whole Foods, where I tried a Tofutti Cutie and crossed off #73 on my 101 in 1001! The store didn’t have vanilla, so I had to resort to chocolate, which is probably my least favorite ice cream flavor. Still, I thought it generally tasted like a regular ice cream sandwich, and my friends agreed.
IMG_8605

My sorority house had been completely renovated and redecorated since last year, so it was especially exciting to visit. I also got to see our house mom and chef, two of the nicest people ever!IMG_9125

The Columbus Marathon had a fantastic expo set up at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. And even though my running friends and I couldn’t drink during Homecoming weekend, we did the next best thing–carboload!IMG_0555

And then, ready or not, race day was upon us! Here are some of us Delta Zetas (including Sally and Mel) freezing at 6:30 in the morning, waiting in our start corral! Honestly, even though I’d registered for this marathon (my first) months ago, I’d been stressed out and barely trained at all. Most marathoners probably log 300 training miles before a race, and I’d logged about 40. So I wasn’t sure I’d even make it past the half-marathon mark…IMG_2596

But I did it! I don’t know if it was good genes, the support of my fellow runners, or God just giving me a break, but I finished all 26.2 miles! It was so ridiculous, I could hardly believe it myself. Around mile 20, my hip joints were dying, but other than that, the distance wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Seriously, though, one of my biggest motivations to keep going was knowing that if I didn’t finish, I’d have to do it ALL OVER AGAIN in order to cross off #90 on my 101 in 1001. That thought really pushed me to continue, even when I felt like my hips were on the verge of breaking. Anyway, now that I know I can do it, I might try another in the future, though I’d probably go ahead and train for that one…

Friday Fancies

I’m generally not a huge fan of animal prints. But when I saw the Steve Madden Madee two years ago, this pair immediately joined my wardrobe. The combination of the leopard print, calf hair, and smoking-slipper style make these perfect for fall. Fortunately, the Steve Madden Croquetl is similar and currently on sale!

Chrysanthemums are the ultimate autumn flower, and I’m happy that they’re decorating our house at the moment. My mom also bought pots of the most radiant yellow mums for our front porch that stand out beautifully against darkening leaves and overcast skies. By the way, was the picture book Chrysanthemum, by Kevin Henkes, a favorite for anyone else as a child?

Sometimes, a hair accessory can pull together a look even better than jewelry or makeup can. For those times when a headband might be a little too much, even a small detail, like one of these knotted hair ties, can make a big difference. Right now, I especially love these fun prints in the girls’ section of J. Crew.image-7

Every fall season, I’m all about enjoying pumpkin-flavored everything. And I’m not ashamed to admit that the Dairy Queen Pumpkin Pie Blizzard is probably my favorite. There’s just something about the “pumpkin pie pieces” that are mixed in!
feedly-update-640x521

Though Feedly isn’t technically new, it’s new to me. And it, as well as other RSS feeds, has experienced a surge in popularity since Google Reader was discontinued this summer. I especially like Feedly because of its organization–each blog and news source I follow is laid out in a clean, logical format. Every morning, I can quickly go through all of the articles that are important to me. Throughout the rest of the day, rather than wasting time by searching for interesting content to read on a break, I can always choose a few of the posts that are constantly added to my feed.

My drink of choice at Starbucks or any other coffee shop is typically a chai tea latte. But I’ve always considered the one that’s served at the little coffee bar inside Nordstrom to be my favorite, even compared to the drinks at foreign-owned tea houses. So when I noticed that the mix Nordstrom uses was being sold in its coffee bar, I jumped at the chance to enjoy it at home. Big Train’s Spiced Chai tea latte mix has a perfectly proportioned blend of spices and sweetness. It’s equally great hot or iced and, if you’re making it yourself, tastes amazing with almond milk.

A few weeks ago, my mom’s friend, who is a dentist, gave her a Philips Sonicare DiamondClean HX9340 toothbrush as a gift, and since I’d already been considering an upgrade from my drug-store, AA-battery-powered model, my mom was nice enough to let me try it. A single brush was all it took for me to know that I would never look back. Who was brushing my teeth before, a sloth? Every time I brush with this magic wand my teeth feel like they’ve just been cleaned at the dentist’s, and I’ve noticed that they look brighter, too. Though the price on these babies is pretty hefty, I’d be willing to go for it whenever mine needs to be replaced. It’s that good! But I’ll bet the lower models also get the job done. (Also, my particular model might be a prototype, since I was unable to find it for sale.)

My friends are probably tired of receiving my Snapchats featuring candy, but come on! How could anyone resist Caramel Apple Sugar Babies? These are officially my favorite Halloween candy, and I wish this season never had to end!

Despite this Indian summer, it’s probably not socially acceptable to wear a tank top and shorts in October. As a Northerner currently living in the South, I always feel like the first person to wear summer clothes when the season begins and the last to continue doing so when it ends. (Wait. I’m that person in Ohio, too… I just don’t like pants!) This is where the Saint James Naval II tee comes in. Lighter than a sweater, but thicker than a shirt, it’s a flawless combination of New England casual and French chic. I’ve pretty much been living in mine, as I tell myself that it justifies my wearing shorts out.

If you’re like I am and are more productive while sitting in a coffee shop or some place similar, you really need to try Coffitivity! The streaming “hum” of a public place has been a huge help in keeping me focused, while also unleashing my creativity. Such a genius idea, and now available to download are apps that can be used offline.
